REgional cooperation for FReshwater Ecosystem Services in Himalayas (REFRESH): Understanding the influences of monsoon variability and compound extremes

About the project

The Himalayas play a critical role in supporting the lives of millions of people, as they are the source of large rivers and provide essential freshwater ecosystem services (FES). However, the sustainability of these ecosystems and their services is under threat due to climate change and human activity. We lack a comprehensive understanding of the availability of FES and the impact of climate extremes/human activities in this region. To address this gap, the REFRESH project aims to study the availability of FES in four Himalayan catchments across India, Nepal, and Bhutan. This project will investigate the impact of monsoon variability and climate extremes on the FES in these catchments to inform decision-making and ensure the long-term sustainability of the ecosystems and their services.
